Key Stage 1 and 2: Tudor sessions

Ordsall Hall Kitchen

The sessions for both Key Stage 1 and 2 are led by our experienced costumed facilitators. Pupils have the chance to dress up during the session, but if you would like to come in costume you are more than welcome to do so.

Key Stage 1: Ordsall Alive!

During this session pupils will explore the Grade 1 listed local landmark Ordsall Hall and find out what life might have been like for the Radclyffe family and their servants during Tudor times. Pupils will explore the kitchen, bedrooms and Great Hall and have the chance to play with some Tudor toys.

Learning objectives

By the end of the session learners will:

  • Have found out about Tudor homes and compared them to homes in the present day.
  • Have played with Tudor toys and compared them to toys in the present day.
  • Be able to identify differences between ways of life at different times.
  • Be able to identify differences between the way of life of rich and poor people in Tudor times.

Cost

  • £4.50 per pupil for schools in Salford.
  • £5.50 per pupil for schools outside Salford.

Times

This is a half day session: 10.00am to 12.00pm or 1.00pm to 3.00pm. If you would like to extend your visit by self-guiding then you are more than welcome to do so - please let us know when you make your booking.

Numbers

We can accommodate one class each day (maximum of 35 pupils).

Facilities

We have a room where your class can eat their packed lunches; this must be pre-booked, so please let us know when making your booking. If the weather is suitable you are also welcome to picnic in our grounds.

Shop

We have a small shop within the Hall with a good range of souvenirs and plenty of items at pocket money prices. You are more than welcome to visit in small groups or you can pre-order some items for your class when you book your visit.

Key Stage 2: Ordsall Alive!

During this session pupils will explore the Grade 1 listed local landmark Ordsall Hall by stepping back in time to help to prepare for a Tudor wedding feast. As the Radclyffe family and their servants prepare for the celebration pupils will help them and will get an insight in to what Tudor homes were like.

There will be hard work to do in the kitchen, Great Chamber and Star Chamber as well as a dance to learn in the Great Hall! Our facilitators will help your class to learn about Tudor celebrations, food and homes as well as discovering how different life was for rich and poor people during the period.

Learning objectives

By the end of the session learners will:

  • Have met and interacted with high and low status characters from Tudor times.
  • Have performed practical activities using replica Tudor objects.
  • Have found out about Tudor homes and compared them to homes in the present day.
  • Be able to identify differences between the way of life of rich and poor people in Tudor times.

Cost

  • £5.50 per pupil for schools in Salford
  • £6.00 per pupil for schools outside Salford

Times

This is a full day session from 10.00am to 2.30pm.

We allow an hour for lunch and have a room where your class can eat their packed lunches. If the weather is suitable you are also welcome to picnic in our grounds. During lunch you may wish to take your class outside to explore, or visit the exhibition on the first floor which isn't used in our session.
