Memories Matter Reminiscence Resources

Salford Museum and Art Gallery is at the forefront of museum-based reminiscence work with older people and the care sector.

Memories Matter is the largest regional reminiscence resource loan service, and offers real museum collection objects and photographs for loan to organisations working with older people. These often include day centres, care homes, nursing homes, sheltered housing schemes, charities and independent and community groups. We aim to help these organisations provide stimulating and enjoyable reminiscence sessions for their residents and clients.

The resources below can be borrowed for FREE by Salford-based organisations. For organisations based elsewhere, a small charge is applied.

Reminiscence resources available for loan are:

  • Picture packs of objects
  • Themed boxes of objects
  • Travelling exhibitions

View the list of all our available resources to loan. All resources must be booked in advance and collected from and returned to Salford Museum and Art Gallery on the agreed dates.

Introduction to Reminiscence Training

Half day introductions to reminiscence training sessions are available to book throughout the year. Occasional training dates are programmed at Salford Museum & Art Gallery, and can also offer this training to staff in your workplace, at a time and location suitable to you.

The sessions also give delegates ideas about setting up and running reminiscence sessions, and look in detail at how reminiscence can benefit older people and how museum collections and photographs can be used to stimulate memory and conversation, and improve confidence and self-esteem. We hope that delegates will feel enthused about reminiscence, and come away with ideas and confidence to apply in the workplace.

Lark Hill Place Reminiscence tours

Reminiscence tours of our Victorian street, Lark Hill Place, can be booked by groups, societies, organisations, day centres, care homes, etc. Each tour can accommodate up to 15 people, and lasts around 45 minutes. They take in a number of the shops and homes in Lark Hill Place, giving fascinating information about the owners and items in the shops, and encourage participants to share their own memories.

Tours must be booked in advance, are subject to staff availability, and usually take place during the working week.
