We are able to offer two tours to adult groups, and really enjoy welcoming them to the museum.
The Victorian Experience
The tours take place in our Victorian Gallery where we have an informal tour of some of the paintings, and then we go down to our Victorian Street for a look at the shops and house on display in Lark Hill Place.
This tour focuses on the life of servants in the big house and Mrs Brown's duties in the 1 up 1 down cottage in Lark Hill Place. Learn about what roles different servants were expected to do, Mrs Brown's wash day and try your hand at a few Victorian cleaning techniques!
It may be possible to adapt tours to other subjects if you have special requirements, please do contact us to discuss this.
The museum is available for group tours from 10.00am to 4.00pm, Tuesday to Friday and Saturday 1.30pm to 4.00pm. However, during term time we have a school class in most weekdays so we try to arrange for groups to visit us around these sessions so that they are not clashing with the school visit. Please contact us for more information and to check availability.
We can accommodate groups of up to 40 people. Groups larger than 20 will be split into two as some areas of the museum have number limitations.
Guided tours during opening hours (as stated above) cost £3.00 per person or £5.50 per person including refreshments. If you require a tour outside our opening hours please enquire for cost per head.
Length of visit
Please allow one hour for your tour, but obviously you are free to stay for as long as you like to have a look around the museum afterwards.
The museum is accessible to wheelchairs with an external ramp, lift and accessible toilets. Some areas of Lark Hill Place are not fully accesible but the majority can be accessed. Light levels in the Victorian Street are low to protect the objects and the floor has a cobbled effect.
Please advise us of any way we can assist your group when you book so we can make sure the visit is as easy as possible for all your members.
Self guided groups
Self guided group visits are welcome at Salford Museum and Art Gallery but we politely ask that you contact us in advance of your visit so that we can check that your visit does no clash with a pre-booked group, school visit or activity. There is no charge for a self-guided group visit.
Catering and refreshments
We have a beautiful cafe on site that offers hot drinks, cakes and light lunches. The cafe can get quite busy especially at lunchtimes so if your group require lunch we ask that you liase with our cafe to pre-order and reserve a table. This will be handled during the booking process.
Travel and parking
There is a limited pay and display parking outside the museum at £2 for 3 hours. During term time at the University the car park can get busy but overflow parking is available at Irwell Place over the road at a cost of £3. There are three accessible parking bays outside the museum. We are on the main Manchester to Bolton bus route with regular services stopping outside the museum, and we are next to Salford Crescent railway station. If you require further details please ask on booking.
If you are coming by coach drop-off is available next to the museum, and we ask coaches to park at Farmer Norton Car Park. Again please ask for details when booking. A minibus bay is available at the front of the museum.

Have you visited Ordsall Hall?
Our sister site Ordsall Hall is a short distance from the museum and is a beautifully restored Tudor Mansion, just near Salford Quays. Tours of this fascinating building tell the story of 650 years of history and the colourful characters who lived there! There gardens are also a beautiful place to relax and enjoy.
