Online reference sources
We subscribe to a wide variety of online reference sources and you don't even need to be in a library to use most of them. All you need is your eight-digit library card number to login.
These sites are accessible free of charge for Salford library members from any computer connected to the Internet. Ancestry.com is only free from library computers.
Access Encyclopedia Britannica Online:
For the Oxford sites please type SAL in front of your eight-digit library card number into the login box (e.g. SAL00123456).
- Oxford Reference Online contains over 130 subject dictionaries, including the Oxford English Dictionary, a thesaurus, quotations and an encyclopedia.
- Oxford English Dictionary Online is the definitive online dictionary, giving the meaning, history, and pronunciation of over half a million words, both present and past.
- Oxford Dictionaries English offers quick search access to definitions of words, phrases and idioms with expert advice on style, usage, grammar and spelling, plus specialist guides for legal and technical writing.
- Oxford Bibliographies offers exclusive, authoritative research guides.
Very Short Introductions offers concise introductions to a diverse range of subject areas.
Ancestry.com contains invaluable information if you are researching your family history. If you are using a library computer you have free access to the site, but you'll need your own subscription to use the site from your home computer.
Ask About Business offers useful business information.
GoCitizen.co.uk is an online study resource for candidates preparing for the Life in the UK Test or British citizenship test. The service includes an online version of the latest official study materials licensed from the Home Office, the people who write the handbook, plus hundreds of practice test questions in the same format as the official test.
Access to GoCitizen.co.uk is completely free for residents who call in to any of the Salford Community Libraries. Members of Salford Community Libraries can also access GoCitizen.co.uk from outside the libraries using their library card number.
When you first use GoCitizen.co.uk, you will need to register with your name, email address and password. There is no charge for this. This information allows GoCitizen.co.uk to save your test scores so you can follow your progress as you practise for the test.
You will need a valid email address to sign up for GoCitizen.co.uk.
If you sign up from outside of the library, you will also need a valid library barcode number, available on your library card.
Theory Test Pro is a highly realistic online simulation of the UK's driving theory test. It contains the official practice test question bank, hazard perception video clips and an online version of the Highway Code. All this material is licensed from the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), the people who set the tests.
Access to Theory Test Pro is completely free for residents who call in to any of the Salford Community Libraries. Members of Salford Community Libraries can also access Theory Test Pro from outside the libraries using their library card number.
When you first use Theory Test Pro, you will need to register with your name, email address and password. There is no charge for this. This information allows Theory Test Pro to save your test scores so you can follow your progress as you practise for the test.

Transparent Languages Online gives you the opportunity to learn a language online, either on your pc or on your mobile device via an app. There are more than 100 language courses on offer - over 90 foreign languages and 25 plus courses for English learners. For access you will need your library card number to join – the format is: SFP+ 8 digits & no spaces – e.g. SFP12345678.
There are computers for public use in all Salford libraries.
