Poppy Project - Ordsall Hall
Salford Community Leisure's Arts Development team have run a series of workshops throughout the Salford area delivering a World War One Centenary Commemoration Project, bringing people across Salford together through creative activities.
Artists Mark Mennell, Jane Dennerly and Claire Hignett worked collaboratively on this innovative World War One inspired participatory arts project taking inspiration from the theme of remembrance; both historical and contemporary, participants explored what it means to commemorate.
Approximately 30 workshops have taken place across Salford and 1100 Salford Residents have taken part in the project. We have worked with a wide range of groups including:
- Little Hulton Peel Park Arts Group
- Any Yarn Goes Knitting Group (Swinton Library)
- Salford Women's Centre
- Refugee Action Group
- Pendleton Library Coffee Morning Group
- Eccles Community Art Gallery
- START in Salford Arts on Prescription Group
- Residents of Brierley House Little Hulton
- East Salford Art Group
- Ordsall Hall, Mosaic Workshop
- Spirit of Salford Event
- Claire Hignett's Workshops
The participants created some stunning felt poppies which are now on display at Ordsall Hall as a bed spread in the Great Chamber and also created mosaic poppies which have been installed in the grounds of the Hall. All pieces are on display from Sunday 3rd August 2014, to respectfully mark the centenary of World War One. The project has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Here's what one of the participants of the Mosaic Workshop had to say about the project:
It was great fun and Mark made it so easy. I am really proud of what we have made and can't wait to see it in Ordsall Hall. Start in Salford Member in Irlam.
