Over the course of five monthly sessions, we will approach a wide range of paintings, sketches, sculptures and other works through the reading of a selection of stories on themes such as work, landscape, the body, community and relationships.

No prior reading is necessary, just be prepared to immerse yourself in inspiring text and images as you sit back and enjoy being read to whilst surrounded by beautiful art. As the memories, emotions and ideas flow, we will catch them together in conversation to build our own new meanings.

An introduction to LS Lowry's life and work, from early life drawings made as a young man at evening classes to his last sketches and mill scenes.

The Lowry Collection is the world's largest public collection of pictures by LS Lowry, covering all periods of his career and often surprising visitors with its broad range of subject matter. Apart from the mill scenes for which he remains best known, there are fine portraits, landscapes and seascapes, and this talk by Claire Stewart, Curator of The Lowry Collection, will look at the full range of Lowry's work.

As celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy draw to a close, and to mark the current 'RA250' exhibitions at Salford Museum & Art Gallery and The Lowry, this talk will also look at his membership of the Academy, in which he took great pride (although he famously turned down repeated offers of more political honours including an OBE).

Lowry and the Pre-Raphaelites, also on show at The Lowry, shows yet another side to Lowry - as a collector of drawings by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and others - completing a fascinating trio of exhibitions in Salford this winter.

Royal Academy exhibition opens at 6.30pm to ticket holders.
